In another sign of the fur farming industry’s decline, the Northwest Farm Food Co-op has sold its feed plant in Burlington, Washington. The new owner, Scoular, will use the facility to produce ingredients for pet food. At one time, the cooperative was a major supplier of mink feed to fur farms in Washington, Oregon and Idaho– with more than 25 member farms.
The sale of the feed plant could be bad news for the few remaining fur farms in the Pacific Northwest, who may now pay more for feed (feed is among the biggest expenses for a fur farm).
